Minions,  the Josh is sad today.  I too am a wondering Pixel Gypsy not living in my home country so that I may be employeed doing what I love.  I am sad because our model is broken and it's getting worse.  I wish some day this would change.

Unite Minions.  Please share.

Charlie the Chameleon and the little Smug Bug...

My dear sweet chocolate covered Minions.  I know what you're thinking.  You're thinking I can only make creepy weird things.  Nay!  I am a bright shiny diamond with many sides.  I can do literally anything.  (throws cape over broad shoulders).

Today I give you Charlie and his little buddy.  The overly smug bug.

Oh muh gawd! It's almost done!!! Godzilla!!

For the last year I've been lucky enough to be the model supervisor on this little gem.  Some pretty awesome visuals by some pretty damn talented people.

Take it Minions.  Take it square on the face...

Merry Christmas Minions! (throwing candy)

Lets see what I have in the bag for you all this year.  Hm...lets see.  Ah, this will do.  Today I give you my latest creation.  I call him Trig.  Why Trig?  Cause his head is the shape of a pyramid.  A pyramid has 3 sides.  3 is the same as Tri.  Tri is pretty damn close to Trig.  Thus.  Trig.  (exhale).

Look just forget it.  It's not important how I come to these conclusions.  The point is that I have a present for you.  Take it!

Fattie McFat Pants meets poly paint...

Hello minions!  (taking off cape.)

Not a nice render or anything.  Cause...frankly I don't have time for such things.  I did toss some color on him however.  Ewwww, he's gross...

Fattie McFat Pants

Today I give you Fattie Mc Fat Pants.  Fattie likes long walks on the beach and incredibly overweight women.  Like, really big.  Like to the point where you question their survival.  It's pretty gross actually.

What the f@#k is a minion anyway?

Since starting this blog I've amassed a great number of Josh Minions.  You might be asking yourself, "What is a Josh Minion?"  A Josh Minion is a follower of my work.  It's sort of like having a stalker but they are willing to do absolutely anything I ask and they do it for the simple reward of being near me.  This may range from making me a sandwich or fixing my car to something more important, like disposing of the dead prostitute in my trunk.  They are sort of like slaves except they are treated better and intensely happy to be around me.  Anyway, I decided to show you exactly what a Josh Minion looks like.  I have no idea why this particular minion is wearing a pair of bunny/cow pajamas.  They are sort of like kids.  You just let them do what ever they want until they risk hurting themselves.  They aren't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer if you know what I mean.

In case you think I'm kidding.  See the reference below.  It's one of my minions visiting me at Siggraph.

(sculpt video to some shortly)

Josh Minions. Today I give you, Beak.

Hello everyone.  I'd like you to meet Beak.  He is outspoken.  Strict.  He would describe himself as, "Firm but fair." and he has positively zero front vision.

Video to come soon.  If you like my work please visit my facebook page.  www.facebook.com/joshrobinson3d

I was contacted recently to do a short video about my life here in Singapore.  The guys that put it together did a great job.  Thanks for making it a fun experience everyone.  (waving).

Oh and an extra thanks to the girl that was spraying water on me for the promotional pics.  You know who you are.

Behold! My sexless doe eyed forked tongued devil.

I'm not sure if I actually like this guy (or girl) or not.  I didn't actually model a penis so... really we are just guessing.  Any who...  I'm hoping the next one will exonerate me in the event that all my Josh minions think this one is sub par.  I'll post it tomorrow.

There is some fuckerie afoot...

It's not uncommon for me to get approached to work on a project or produce a DVD or make a quick tutorial.  In this case I was approached to do a creature DVD for a larger box set.  It's also not unusual for people to not follow through with their part.

About a year ago I sculpted this creature from concept (not my concept) to final sculpt.  I also retopo'd it using 3D Coat.  I probably recorded 12-15 hours of work with Narration.  Not just any narration.  Sweet, sweet, Josh narration.  Yea thats right.  The soothing kind.  The kind that makes you feel warm in the pit of your stomach... anyway...

(drum roll)  I've never heard back about the dvd after giving up all the content over a year ago.  I may just give up the entire load of content for free to my stalkers/minions.  I did sign a contract however so, I'll be contacting them prior to this.  Though I cant imagine they have any plans to actually release this anymore.  Zbrush has gone up like two versions since then.  Who wants to buy a dvd that is pre-dynamesh.

A few shots of the creature.

Get on your knees my minions! Tea Bag has graced you with his presence...

He's in the shape of a "t" and he's got bags of, god knows what attached to the sides of his face.  So naturally his name is Tea Bag.

This was about a three hour sculpt including me smooshing around a dynamesh blob till I decided what the heck I was going to do.  As always, Enjoy!

I'll give it to Spidey...he's got some balls.

Hulk was like, "Hey Spidey what are you doing later?"  Spidey was like, "Your mom".

Next thing I know cars are being over turned, children are crying and hulk has web on his face.

Original inspiration of this was an image my friend Carlos posted on my Facebook page.  I'm not positive who the original artist is.

Middle Aged Hulk

For some reason this turned into a middle aged hulk.  He's got a muffin top and low sex drive.  I don't know what his deal is.  Hulk is just depressed lately... Suck it up Hulk! (groaning in the background).

Ultimately I'm going to turn this into a more finished piece with a couple characters.  This is the first pass on my hulk character.  Not much time spent on this but the forms are there and I like the silhouette. The ear is totally whack and he's got not hair.  Matter of fact he's naked.  Sh#T.... maybe he's upset cause he's got that Ken doll situation going on down stairs... anyway...

My angry little minion, William Wallace.

I'm not sure if I like William with or with out the flag more.  Regardless, I added a flag today.  I actually made the flag in a completely different zbrush file and just added it in via Photoshop afterward.  Enjoy minions!

Viva La Resistance!!! (flailing hands)

I spent a bit longer on the paint pass.  I think this one looks better.  The first pass was alright but it was quick.  I've added a little more color as well as brush stroke work into the final.  Still a quick piece overall.  Enjoy my minions... (rubbing hands)...

Viva La Resistance!!!

A friend of mine showed me a hilarious little character painted by Sam Spratt the other day.  I decided to do a 3D sculpt of him.  I tried to stick withing the same guidelines that Sam set when he painted his.  He painted it in 2.5 hours and so I sculpted this in about 2.5 hours as well.  I'll probably add a flag in his left hand tomorrow.

Enjoy my minions! mu-hahaahhaha (rubbing hands).

Original Painting I saw that Sam Spratt had done.

Behold my minions!!!!!! I give you Buttercup.

Something I came up with this week.  I started with a sphere and kept moving things around till I got an interesting silhouette.  It's still really rough but you get the idea.  I think his anatomy lends to some interesting animation possibilities.  Or maybe not.  I'm pretty Biased.  I did make it after all.

Hello my minions. Today I give you... Beef Curtains.

This is how crappy my crap looks before that crap is finished...

Just in case you were wondering if my stuff always started out on the right foot... uh, it doesn't.  wtf...

Put your kids to bed. Noodle Nose has arrived...

Well I've been a little bit absent as of late with the exception of a previous post where I ranted about the school system and their epic fail.  I decided to step off my soap box for a few moments and post a quick creature concept.  Behold, Noodle Nose.

This is about 1 hour or so.  Maybe 2.  I have not gotten into the new Zbrush yet.  I'm looking forward to trying out their new features as well as the new shaders.

I'll likely work on this more as it was a pretty quick concept.  Enjoy my minions...

In your face Jerry Maguire

Dear Schools,

I'm writing this because I'm growing tired of listening to frustrated students abandon their gifts and talents because of either failed parents or a failed system.

My name is Josh Robinson and I am an artist.  I'm not an artist because I make a living creating art.  I'm an artist because that is who I am.  It defines me as a person and I'd be an artist no matter what I did for a living.  Now before I begin, I should say that I do happen to make a living creating art but this is in spite of the educational system and not because of it.

Most people go to school in order to find a job that will allow them to succeed instead of identifying their greatest talents and then creating an environment in which that talent can flourish.  One of the biggest issues we face in education is not only the dismissal of the arts but creative thinking in general.  There is an educational  pyramid where things like math, language and science are at the top and things like art, dance, music tend to be at the bottom.  What are the odds that a school faculty will sit in a circle and have a discussion on how to save money and one of their solutions is to cut the Math program?  Why then do we feel it acceptable to do this with respect to the arts?  You strip the creative thinkers of the one area where they may have an opportunity to blossom.  The very environment in which we learn implies that being an artist is either not the correct path to take or at the very best, an unsuccessful one.

So how do we learn now?  Well, from the moment you step into a school you are blindly lead down a road that completely disregards your unique talents as well as your comprehension abilities.  Maybe you're like me and you absorb information brilliantly when it's oral but not when it's read?  Instead you tell us the answers to many questions and then you tell us to memorize it because there will be a test on Friday.  Is this creative thinking?  Probably not.  Are you maximizing the likelihood of a creative thinker?  Probably not.  If a child thinks outside of the box is he or she rewarded for his or her unique approach?  Not only are they corrected for their different approach but the class is rarely structured in a way for this spontaneous thought to developed in the first place.  You go out of your way to teach us about people like Newton and Einstein.  People who thought creatively in spite of their surroundings and yet you teach it in an environment that stifles the very creativity that you're teaching.

When I was in High School I was told by my student counsellor that I could never be an artist.  Not because I didn't have any talent but because he could not imagine a world in which that was a way to make money.  What a deflating thing to say to a young person.  To tell a young artist that the very thing that defines them.  The thing that they need to do in order to feel fulfilled as a person they can never be.  How profoundly wrong was this person to say such a thing.  Simply because he could not see an immediate opportunity.  Simply because he was not a creative thinker.  You are preparing me for jobs that don't even exist yet.  You owe it to me to be better than this.  You owe it to me to push my talents and not hinder them with your short sidedness simply because I'm not operating within the guidelines that you deem appropriate.

Like many artists I was placed on Ritalin and diagnosed with ADHD.  At one point it was even suggested that I had a learning disability.  Why?  How can this be?  Why am I able to flourish outside of school and succeed profoundly and yet you think I have a learning disability?  It's because everything that I had a passion for the educational system didn't.  The system has a very linear track and if you are not on that track then you are told that you are broken.  Moreover you are told you will not succeed.  How is it possible for me to get a genuine education in the thing that is best for me when you decided what track I should be on before you had even met me?  This approach to education is profoundly incorrect.  Human talent is incredibly diverse and it should be a schools primary function to create the conditions in which a talent can flourish.  Not disregard talent or dissuade a young person's passions.

Hatchet Wound gets a paint job.

Couple hour paint job on Hatchet Wound.  This is 100% poly paint.  I'll probably throw him into BunkSpeed to see if i can get a sexy render.  This is just a screen grab.

Enjoy my minions.  Mu-ahahahh

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

Everyone. I'd like you to meet Hatchet Wound.

So basically this guy looks like he was hit full on in the face with a hatchet.  Its sort of a common concept ever since the Blade movies came out.  I saw a clay sculpt by an artist named (gotta get his name) and it inspired me to do this today.

Its about a 4 hour piece or so.

Enjoy my minions.  Enjoy!  Mu-ahahahahah!!!! (rubbing hands).
