Alien Critter gets some new legs

I guess he's pretty well fleshed out now.  I went back and forth a lot on the arm and leg design and ended up settling on this.  I'm pretty happy with it I think.  Here is the full shot of him.

Alien Critter gets some new arms

Alien Critter

Well I bailed on my "meat face" guy.  I'm happy with the head sculpt but I don't want to do yet another typical quadruped character.  How boring and typical.  I was a bit disappointed that I wasn't being more creative.  Instead I opted to create this critter.  I'll update this guy as I flesh out his concept a bit more.  This is about 5 hours or so.

Alien gets a quick paint job

Well I decided to do a color concept of my alien.  I went ahead and recorded my session also if you're wanting to see my painting process.  You can see the paint video for this in my tutorial section.  It's 35 minutes long and done in real time.

Alien Sketch, with some uh... ball thingies.

I decided to take a break from my other creature to do something else.  I sketched out this head pretty quick, maybe an hour or so.  It was looking pretty interesting so I decided to pick it back up at the end of my day and I spend another couple hours on it.  Its actually still a bit low resolution.  I may step up a level and put some color on him.

Meat Face gets an upgrade!

I played around with a million different body types before settling on something final.  I wanted to show a few variations that I was exploring.  Keep in mind the zSphers are just an armature and he'd be beefed up to match the mass of his head and shoulders.

I settled on a heavy set aggressive silhouette with out toes.  They'll be closer to elephant feet.

Painted version of Beefy

Pretty quick texture job on Beefy today.  Just wanted to get some color on him.  Enjoy

Thursday, November 18, 2010

I shall call him "Beefy".

Fleshed out this guy a bit more.  Obviously his name is Beefy.  What else could it be.  He's effing Beefy.

Random Creature WIP

Nothing special.  Just noodling.  I'll probably zSphere a body out in the next day or two to flesh out some sort of full creature concept and move on from there.  So stay tuned!

Bat Horse Thingie Update

I wanted to test the new GoZ feature in Zbrush 4 so I decided to add a pair of legs to my bat character.  I have no idea why then ended up having hooves.  lol.  More to the point I have no idea why he has one large partially exposed ball.  Hm.. I should look into that.

Anyway,  here you go.

More Marmoset Engine Goodness

just wanted to test out some SSS on the real time version of my bat.

The Marmoset Engine

I'm always looking for some new tech that flies under the radar.  I've known about the Marmoset Engine (real time game engine) for quite some time but I always get busy and forget to give it a go.  Well I finally loaded up my trusty real time cave troll last night.  Wow.  I'm pretty blown away at the quality.  I've got 4k maps on character and 2k on the rest.  I have HDR lighting, Sub surface Scattering, A color grade, 1 real time light, Light Bloom and depth of field all rendering in real time.  Oh and it costs 50.00

It's like being hand washed by a beautiful woman, who is using a smaller beautiful woman as the wash cloth.  Meanwhile, I cant even sort basic transparency in Maya's viewport.

Sid the angry turtle.

Well I did a pretty quick color pass on Sid.  Ha, he's looking pretty full of character now.  I might do another pass and add more color to the concept.  I'm happy with the style though.

Sid the angry turtle.

Worked in the shell a bit really quick.  I may do a detail pass on him.  But he's done for the most part in terms of look.  Enjoy.

Sid the angry turtle.

Well this little guy ended up having a lot more personality than I thought he would.  He's been a lot of fun to sculpt so far.  Still need to step up another level and obviously I have not touched the shell.  He's got a fun silhouette now so I think the proportions are pretty much done. I'll update the shell soon.

Ok this is gonna be funny...

I liked the turtle head I made so I decied to block out a body for him and project all the details onto my new mesh.  This is literally just the projected details and my new base mesh.  I'll update this guy soon.

Speed Sculpt Character Concept (video also available)

This is a 45 minute speed sculpt I did from zspheres.  I didn't really know what I wanted when I started so I was just going off the top of my head as the sculpt progressed.  I'd like to fix the mouth a bit and actually make a totally different set of teeth.  If I did those things however then it would not be a "speed sculpt" so i'll resist that temptation right now.

I added a time lapsed video of my process as well.  You can find it in my tutorial section.  I hope you enjoy!

Bat thingie with color

I painted a pretty quick color pass on him today.  Looks much better with some color.  The wings blend better also.  enjoy!

Bat thingie

Small update.  Tweaked the ears and "hands".  May do a color pass next.

Bat thingie

Made a pretty significant change to the arms and the wings.  Took the advice of a buddy of my buddy Raj and went more bat-like.  Still need to flesh them out but this represents the idea..

Bat thingie

Hm... not settled on this or anything.  I think the silhouette is cool but the way the wings attach is so anatomically incorrect this that its annoying me.  We'll see if I keep it or not.  I may just do a short under wing that resides under the arm pit and the bicept area.  Would be more subtle but also more practical.

Bat thingie

went up another level and added more detail.  Getting closer now I think.  I may have to add wings arms etc... right now he's just sporting nubs.

Here is the update

Bat thingie

Had some time today to block out a new creature concept. Just stared with Zspheres and monkeyed around for a bit.  Finally settled on a bat-ish thing.  Still very early work in progress but the design I'm happy with the general design now.

Lizard Dude update

Well I decided to add some hands to this guys as well as a few more SPIKES.   Grrr braawwwrr!!!
I used zshpheres to make the hands and then just kinda positioned them where i thought they should go.  Then I attached their base mesh to the base mesh of my character and reprojected all the details onto my new mesh.

Lizard Dude update

This is pretty close to done I think.  The original artists that created this concept is named Aris Kolokontes.  I found a practical sculpt of it online and worked of that for reference.  I kept it pretty similar for the most part.  The color pass is my own.

2 days on the sculpt I think and a few hours on the color concept.

Lizard Dude update

probably as detailed as i'm gonna sculpt for him.  I dont like to go too fine on my sculpting detail.  Thats what bump maps are for.  I'll probably do a texture pass next.  I'll post up the original concept art tonight as well as the base mesh.
